Street Fighter Week

This week, starting from last Sunday (November 16th), to next Tuesday (November 25th) is all about Street Fighter. It was my life once. From 7-11 to High Voltage; from The Liquor Store to Megacade; from Nickel City to Yellow Brick Road; it’s been awhile since I’ve played. But I got to play last Sunday at Willy’s Workshop’s Super Turbo Tournament.

How’d I do?

Hint: I won $20. See the coverage here at willysantos.com.

November 25th is when Super Street Fighter IITurbo HD Remix drops on the Playstation Network.
Here’s the trailer.

But, what’s happening in between those two dates? And, how does this relate to design?

I’m working on redesigning the characters in the ukiyo-e style.

It took a week. But, I finally finished playing photo editor and uploaded the shots (links and samples below) that I took at Golden Hall last week. This is what it was like here in San Diego at Election Central on November 4th, 2008.

HOPE … for Chickens!

Obama-inspired Illustration for California's Proposition 2 regarding Standards for Confining Farm Animals. Illustration by RBST.

I’m not really a political person. (I wrote in Eric B. for President during the 2004 elections. Heads know what I’m talking about.) But I’ve been on the campaign trail for the bulk of this year designing direct mail, and other propoganda.

When you design something, you hope it makes an impact and/or reaches as broad an audience as possible. Direct mail does reach a wide audience. But, whether it’s memorable or not is a different story. That’s up to who’s looking at your work.

Two of the more memorable projects came at the end of this political season (basically last month, but really tomorrow).

I just want to focus on one of those projects today because it got mentioned on the Union-Tribune’s blog. This was my last political design for this year. It’s an illustration (based on Sheperd Fairey’s HOPE poster for Obama) for a summary of California’s Proposition 2 from Chris Crotty’s Unofficial Voter Guide.

Here’s what the San Diego Union-Tribune had to say about it:

…the highlight may be the Obama-inspired poster art for Proposition 2, which concerns confinement of animals like this chicken…
